Dheepan is a compelling depiction of both human survival and the immigrant experience. Three Tamil refugees, Dheepan (Jesuthasan Antonythasan), Yalini (Kalieaswar Srinivasan) and Illayaai (Claudine Vinasithamby) use the passports of dead people and pretend to be a family and by so-doing gain entrance to France. They are settled in a housing estate near Paris where they encounter not only intense disorientation, in a world not their own, but the violence of a tough drug gang. There are scenes that tug at our heartstrings and others that shiver with danger. The performances given by the three main characters are excellent, especially as they are all making their movie debut.
